Okay, I lied

The last two years have been busy, lots of changes. My son was born. I changed jobs. I struggled with some personal issues and generally did my best to get some things done. 

1. I picked up blacksmithing and woodworking as hobbies. I am still in the getting to know you phase of both, but I have made some cool stuff and it has been helpful in developing plans for an old idea that I am going to start working the spring. 

2. This years NaNoWriMo looks like it might actually meet the goal! This is despite lots of distractions, including spending a night in the hospital with my mom. She is doing great and I am at 42k words. Not bad for having two kids under 6, a full time+ job, and the will power of a sloth. 

3. I made mega progress with some personal issues and am enjoying a much happier and easier life as the result. 

I am hoping to get a few posts up here a week, but if not... maybe another two years.

To Make a Knife

As I noted in an earlier post, I have been getting into blacksmithing as a hobby. It is nice to work with my hands, since my day job is entirely behind a desk. A couple months back I attended a class at Tillers International , a local organization in the Kalamazoo area. The class was on making a knife. I had taken a basic blacksmithing class last year, so I had some idea of how to manage the coal fire forges, what tools to use to shape the blade, but the creation of a knife from start to finish was a new challenge. Steel is a fascinating thing. The carbon/iron alloy that our world is built on. It is capable of holding up sky scrapers, but it can also can be made so brittle that you can snap it with your bare hands. Why Blogging?

I keep a pretty light presence on social media. Facebook is reserved for sharing pics of the kids with the extended family, keeping up on groups and events for said children, and the occasional political post when I get sufficiently pissed off and want to cause a ruckus.  Twitter is for pretending I am on the same level as my betters, snark, and keeping up with a handful of old forum friends.  Everything else, if it exists, is a digital graveyard.  Why blog? Because I control it. I control the comments, I control the content. I control horizontal and the vertical... wait that is the Outer Limits. I am not limited to a specific character limit. I am not limited to what an algorithm is showing my fans (all none of them). I am subject to the whims of Google at the moment, but that is true of pretty much all of the Internet.  We are in the endgame of media consolidation, provider consolidation, network consolidation.
